Field characteristics

Cyst of Protoperidnium conicoides (Paulsen 1905) Balech 1974.

Field characteristics:
Proximate cyst of spherical shape, with a circular outline in dorsal view. The autophragm is brown in colour, thin, with a smooth to microgranulate surface. Archeopyle is intercalary (2a’) of symmetrically hexagonal to subtrapezoidal shape. No other indication of tabulation.

Dimensions: Cyst body diamater: 29 to 54 µm.
Motile affinity: Protoperidinium conicoides (Paulsen 1905) Balech 1974.
Cyst-theca relationship: Wall and Dale, 1968
Stratigraphic range: Upper Miocene to Recent.

Comparison with other species: The only character on which you can recognise this species is its archeopyle form. Often the cysts are folded and you can’t determine the species.
