Field characteristics

Cyst of Diplopelta symmetrica Dale et al., 1993

Characteristics:
Spherical brown cyst covered with numerous solid hairlike processes. These processes frequently do not cover the cyst body completely and in these cases rounded areas devoid of ornament can be observed. These areas vary in size, form and frequence and do not reflect tabulation. Archeopyle is formed by a zig-zag split along the sutures: 2‘/3‘, 3‘/2“, 3‘/3“, 1a/3“, 1a/4“, 4‘/4“, 4‘/5“, 4‘/6“.

Dimensions: body diameter 37-50 μm; process length 1 - 4 μm
Motile affinity: Diplopelta symmetrica
Stratigraphic range: recent

Comparison with other species:
Diplopelta symmetrica most closely resembles cysts of Islandinium brevispinosum in having numerous small hairlike processes. It differs from I. brevisinosum in having smaller and thinner hairs that cover the entire cyst surface and are more densely packed. Furthermore the hairs of D. symmetrica are not irregularly distributed bur very often fields without hairs are present on the cyst wall. Apart from this the archeopyle of D. symmetrica is much larger forming a split along more sutures, whereas the archeopyle of Islandinium brevispinosum is apical.
