Session 10.1: Applications in 3D geological modelling

In the past years 3D modelling technology developed rapidly, enabling and supporting manifold approaches in lifting knowledge about the subsurface. At the same time an evolution in 3D modelling is traceable. While the first period of action has been dominated by isolated modelling and application, in recent times integrated modelling turned out to be increasingly needed, intending to bridge 1) boundaries (federal states, countries), 2) subject areas (e.g. in the frame of assessing potential conflicts of subsurface use), and 3) platforms such as Geo Information Systems (GIS), photogrammetry, 3D/4D-modelling as well as solutions for storage and distribution of 3D models. The need of progress in this field also is reflected by respective meetings which regularly offer a platform for a professional exchange. Therefore this session is looking for contributions from Geological Survey Organisations, academia and the private sector which deal with the topics mentioned above.

 

Session 10.2: Methane- and methane-hydrate-related processes at margins around the Arctic Ocean

Methane is widespread in marine continental margins and permafrost deposits around the Arctic Ocean where it occurs as dissolved gas, as free gas or in the solid form of methane hydrate. Current warming in the Arctic realm probably leads to major changes in methane dynamics and methane and methane-derived carbon that escape from sediments and reach the atmosphere could strengthen greenhouse warming. This session will focus on current research on methane dynamics of this northernmost area and will include geological, geophysical, geochemical, geo-microbial, and oceanographic as well as multi-disciplinary contributions.

 

Session 10.3: Tectonic systems

We invite contributions from the fields of tectonics, structural geology, and crystalline geology. Regional and process-oriented studies from all kinds of active or fossil tectonic settings are welcome – rifting, subduction, collision, transform, and intra-plate deformation. Studies dealing with the development of methods related to the deformation of crust and lithosphere from micro-scale to plate scale are also invited.

 

Session 10.4: Advances in scientific drilling in the oceans and on the continents

Ursula Röhl (MARUM, Bremen), Thomas Wonik (LIAG, Hannover), Ulrich Harms (GFZ, Potsdam)

The principal objective of the session on Scientific Drilling will be to present accomplishments and results of ocean, continental and polar scientific drilling. New plans for research drilling projects are invited for presentation including International Ocean Discovery Program, IODP and International Continental Scientific drilling Program, ICDP as well as national scientific projects. Research topics of socio-economic relevance such as climate and environmental variability, natural geological hazards, and natural resources including the deep biosphere will be addressed in this session.
