Join us for the MARUM experience!

This video presents research opportunities at MARUM. It especially addresses early career scientists, who would like to make use of state-of-the-art lab infrastructure, a communicative international working atmosphere and the perspective of taking part in exciting sea-going expeditions. The video also highlights the quality of life in Bremen, a city with 550,000 inhabitants lying on the banks of the Weser not far away from the North Sea shores.

The Labrador experience

“The Labrador Experience” documents an exciting field trip of an international group of PhD students to the Torngat Mountains National Park, Northern Labrador (Canada). Both the field trip and the participation in an expedition onboard the German research ice breaker Polarstern was part of the PhD education within the International Research Training Group ArcTrain.

Background: During recent decades both Arctic ecosystems and (indigenous) people living in the far North have been substantially affected by global climate change. According to the latest IPCC report an anthropogenic contribution to rising temperatures and thus, thinning and loss of sea ice, shrinking glaciers, deepening of permafrost horizons, changing plant communities etc. is likely. These changes call for very well educated scientists who are not only able to thoroughly investigate the ongoing physical processes that characterize the Arctic change. Moreover, they should be in the position to embed their findings in a wider societally relevant context. The International Research Training Group ArcTrain aims at educating such highly professional researchers. Internal courses and seminars as well as external training opportunities help to lay the foundations and to fulfill the ambitious targets.
