MARUM Writing Space

for anyone who needs some quiet time to work on a text
and feels motivated by some structure and company while writing

  • Whatever text you are working on, writing is most efficient and rewarding when you fully focus on it.
  • Writing in company with fellow writers can boost your motivation.
You will get an introduction into a highly efficient writing technique!

The MARUM Writing Space...

… is a format that allows you to focus on whatever text you are working on without distraction.

… provides time and space to write in company with some of your colleagues

... offeres to work with a structured writing technique

... is open to anyone associated with MARUM

What do I need to bring?

  • Pen and paper or a laptop and cord
  • An outline or notes for the chapter, article or other text you want to write (short notes only because your focus will be on writing rather than reading)
  • Ear plugs or headphones if you are sensitive to typing noises
Drinks and healthy snacks will be provided for the breaks !

How is the Writing Space organised?

  • Please arrive between 09.30 and 09.45 to allow for some time to set up your writing place; doors will close at 09.50
  • You will get a brief introduction to the Writing Space and method
  • Writing time starts at 10.00 sharp (doors will stay closed to ensure for quiet time during the periods of writing; therefore, late arrivals are not possible)
  • We will have four writing sessions with short breaks in between to refresh and do something that is not work-related; a moderator will keep time
  • We finish the Writing Space with a short wrap-up
During the writing sessions, please focus on writing only.


During the breaks, you are welcome to

  • Look at your mobile phone
  • Eat and drink
  • Move around
  • Chat with your colleagues

Who can participate?

  • All MARUM members, including PhD students of GLOMAR, ArcTrain, SLATE and the TRR181: PhD students, Postdocs, senior scientists, lecturers, technicians, secretaries, science communicators, and science managers...
  • People who feel encouraged to spend a morning on writing their text (we will strictly stick to the time schedule to allow for a constructive writing atmosphere)

No need to register, you are welcome to participate on any Friday!
