Career Chat with Dr. Mischa Ungermann

Career Chat. Post-academic job perspectives.
Mischa Ungermann
Background: marine environmental sciences, sea ice modelling
Current position: senior data scientist at planblue GmbH, Bremen
At MARUM: from 2013 to 2017 as a member of ArcTrain (PhD student at AWI)

I moved to Bremen to study Industrial Mathematics, at that time still with the goal of the good old "Diplom". In that time, I took Physics as a minor subject and specialized in the second half of my studies into Environmental Physics. That lead me to a PhD position at AWI in the working group Climate Dynamics. During my time in academia, I was working on simulations of the Arctic sea ice and evaluated different heavily used parameterizations against modern observational data.

After my PhD, I knew that I did not want to stay in science, but unfortunately I did not know what else to do. I took some time off and encountered the field of "data science". The name seemed like I would fit in there, having worked both with both, "data" and "science". Thus, I ended up at planblue in 2019.

planblue is a Bremen-based startup that works on innovative methods for mapping the sea floor to protect our oceans and foster a sustainable blue economy. My task is to use the data collected by the different sensors of our underwater satellite and refine it into valuable information. Or if you prefer current buzzwords: I work on an end-to-end data science pipeline based on artificial intelligence.
