Career Chat with Dr. Neele Meyer

Career Chat. Post-academic job perspectives.
Neele Meyer
Background: marine geosciences
Current position: science communication officer at Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost
At MARUM: from 2017 to 2020 as a member of GLOMAR
(PhD student at Uni Bremen and Senckenberg
am Meer, Wilhelmshaven)

I studied (Marine) Geosciences at the University of Bremen. During my master studies, I was at the University of Waikato, New Zealand for one semester. After graduation, I had the opportunity to do a PhD in Marine Geology at Senckenberg am Meer, Wilhelmshaven, and the University of Bremen, supervised by Prof. Dr. André Freiwald. For my dissertation, I studied bioerosion in the Arctic and Antarctic. Throughout this time, I was a member of GLOMAR and took over the role as PhD representative for one year.

During my PhD, I already realised how much I enjoy science communication. Therefore, I am very grateful that I can now work as a science communication officer at the Klimahaus 8° Ost in Bremerhaven. In this role, I am asked to give talks and interviews (radio and television) and contribute to keeping the exhibitions up to date. I am further involved in the implementation of new exhibition areas. In other words, I make sure that the Klimahaus stays on the latest scientific level internally, and that this is also communicated to the outside world.
