Career Chat with Dr. Valeriia Kirillova

Career Chat. Post-academic job perspectives.
Valeriia Kirillova
Background: isotope geochemistry
Current position: environmental consultant at ERM - Environmental Resources Management GmbH in Frankfurt a.M.
At MARUM: from 2014 to 2017 as PhD student
and ArcTrain and GLOMAR member

I did my undergraduate studies in chemistry when living in Russia where I originally come from. For my master I decided to change my direction and did a double diploma German-Russian master in polar and marine sciences, spending one semester in Kiel and working on my thesis at GEOMAR.

After graduation, I moved to Bremen for my PhD with ArcTrain in MARUM, working in the isotope geochemistry group on sediment samples from the Baffin Bay. After finishing my degree, I was quite open to a wide job search, not sure what to look for. I spend about a year polishing my German, working part-time at the Universum Science Center and applying for jobs from time to time.

In the end of 2018, I got a job at ERM as a consultant and moved to Frankfurt. I am working in Product Stewardship department, assessing products for environmental and human risks in order for them to be compliant with regulations on the market worldwide. I additionally hold a role of sustainability coordinator for my Business Unit, collecting office emission data for our annual Sustainability report and a board member of the ERM Foundation, which is supporting environmental projects in Germany and abroad.

In February 2020, I am moving to a cosmetic company, staying within regulatory affairs sector and planning to develop my career in Product Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment.
