Career Chat with Dr. Natalie Höppner

Career Chat. Post-academic job perspectives.
Natalie Höppner
Background: isotope geochemistry
Current position: science communicator at European Science Communication Institute [ESCI] GmbH
in Oldenburg
At MARUM: from 2015 to 2017 as PhD student
and GLOMAR member

In 2009, I started my way into the geosciences with a bachelor's degree at the University of Bremen, followed by a master's degree in 2012 at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen. My main interest during my studies was geochemistry, especially isotope geochemistry. After the master's degree I was drawn back to the north of Germany and was lucky enough to get a PhD at MARUM in the research group 'Isotope Geochemistry' in 2014. I conducted provenance studies in two river basins in South America and as a personal highlight I had the opportunity to conduct my own sampling campaign in Brazil with a DAAD scholarship.

After my graduation in 2017, I took a short break from work to have some personal time. At the end of 2018, I started an internship at ESCI in Oldenburg, followed by the opportunity in 2019 to spend a year as a trainee in the field of science communication with them. Since 2020 I have been working as a full-time science communicator at ESCI and managing two projects.
