The 77th Annual Meeting of the German Geophysical Society (Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft e.V.) took place at the University of Potsdam in cooperation with the GFZ Potsdam from 27th to 30th March 2017.

The conference gathered geophysicists from all over Germany and addressed special topics related to the key research activities at the Geophysical institutes in Potsdam.

Besides scientific talks and poster presentations, participants were able to make contact with companies at the company exhibition. The conference was topped off with a conference dinner, public evening talk and a guided tour on the historical Telegrafenberg. A student evening, meet & greet and lunch and learn seminars were organized for early-career scientists to inform about career opportunities and help networking.

INTERCOAST PhD candidate Anke Schürer (IC30) presented her latest work about magnetic heavy mineral enrichments in beach sands at the annual meeting in form of a poster. The contribution showed current results of core images of beach sand cores taken at the “black-and-white” Orokawa Beach in New Zealand. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility were compared with grain size and color to address hydrodynamic properties of the beach sands. The presentation was well received and opened the floor for constructive discussion about heavy mineral enrichment in beach sands under extreme weather conditions.
