Deep Sea Mining - Threat or challenge for science and society?
18 February 2014
Deep sea mining is a process of mineral exploitation in the deep sea, i.e. from or near the ocean floor. Deep-sea minerals include manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides (see e.g. BGR).
While the development of new technologies seem to offer a solution to meet the growing demand for minerals on the global market, the potential impact on the environment and on society are only poorly understood.
This GLOMAR Panel Discussion aims to identify different positions and arguments with respect to the topic.
