Pile driveability analysis of vibratory-driven piles based on Vibro-CPTu

To reduce the harmful noise for marine life generated during impact driving of offshore foundations, vibratory driving is developed as an alternative. Vibratory driving provides a silent, fast and cost-efficient method for installing piles for offshore foundations, that in addition causes less pile fatigue than impact driving. One of the main issues of vibratory driving is the lack of reliable drivability analyses. This is due to uncertainties in understanding of cyclic soil response due to vibratory driving and the effect of different vibratory driving parameters on the soil response.

In this study a vibratory cone penetration test (VCPTu) is advanced as a soil exploration method and used to improve the understanding of the soil behavior during vibratory driving in Cuxhaven Sand. First, the soil response during to vibratory driving shall be investigated in the calibration chamber (MARCC) by simulating field condition to estimate the influence of various parameters on the drivability. Later, the cyclic behavior of Cuxhaven sand shall be assessed in dynamic triaxial test to understand the relationship between the soil response in VCPT and dynamic triaxial test. Finally, a large-scale field tests shall be carried out to ascertain the laboratory results.
