PhD Project

Sea level changes during the last interglacial period in three tectonically stable areas of the Western Atlantic

During the Quaternary, glacial and interglacial periods alternated due to changes in the terrestrial orbit. The current period, the Holocene, is an interglacial characterized by drastic increases in global temperatures mainly caused by human activity. The last interglacial, which began about ~128 000 years ago was also a warm period whose temperatures have been associated with smaller ice sheets and a sea-level higher than today. My PhD will revolve around the study of last interglacial sea-level proxies in the Western Atlantic, and it will aim to advance the scientific knowledge in this field.

The main goal of my project will be to use field and geochemical dating methods to study three areas in the Western Atlantic. In parallel, I will review literature from areas where I will not be able to do fieldwork and will generate a data-transect that will allow me to assess relative sea-level changes on a wide geographical scale. I will compare my results with those shaped by glacio-isostatic adjustment models, in search for the best matching solutions among several that will be made available by collaborators of the ERC project WARMCOASTS, in which my project is embedded.
