MARUM and its Graduate School GLOMAR offer a dedicated course programme for Early Career Researchers in marine sciences. We follow a defined MARUM standard of education which aims to provide excellent training opportunities.
A broad range of transferable skills trainings aim to foster self-responsibility and to provide competences that are needed in science and beyond. Basic and specific knowledge courses aim to fill potential gaps, provide deeper insights into the topic and into different research fields. Multi- and transdiciplinary thinking are an important aspect of our education concept and are promoted in all MARUM / GLOMAR courses.
With our educational activities, we closely cooperate with our partner institutions and welcome PhD students and postdocs from AWI, ZMT, MPI, ICBM and the University of Oldenburg in our courses. In turn, MARUM Early Career Researchers and GLOMAR members have the opportunity to participate in training courses offered at our partner institutions.
Courses are offered in five different categories:
(1) Knowledge Base
When starting their PhD in marine sciences, PhD students need basic knowledge related to their research field. This is not always given because many PhD students have done their Master in adifferent field.Courses in this category aim to (a) fill potential gaps in basic knowledge in the student's own research field and (b) provide insights into different research fields to others.
(2) Basic Skills / Methods
At the beginning of their PhD in marine sciences, PhD students also need basic skills and knowledge of methods related to working in their research field.Courses in this category aim to (a) fill potential gaps in basic skills and/or methods in the student's own research field and (b) provide insights into different research fields to others.
(3) Specific Knowledge
Building on basic knowledge and skills, specific knowledge courses aim to provide a deeper insight into a topic or research field by providing expert knowledge. Topics for courses in this category may be developed by the participants of the basic knowledge or skills courses to further advance their expertise.
(4) Transferable Skills
Beyond the development of subject-specific skills and knowledge, there is a need for scientists to acquire a more generic and universal set of transferable skills that will help them with their daily tasks.Courses in this category aim at providing PhD students with competences related to e.g. leadership, communication, presentation, teamwork, etc. and skills such as project and time management.
(5) Overarching Topics
These are topics that are not related to a specific research field but rather involve many, if not all, fields of marine sciences such as policy making, law of the seas, governance etc.
