Bremen is outstanding

Excellent funding brings excellent results in the research labs of the DFG Research Center Ocean Margins in Bremen

Geosciences in Bremen are outstanding!

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation) has just published its fourth funding ranking. In the field of geosciences no one even comes close to the University of Bremen. Almost 28 million Euros flowed from Bonn to Bremen between 2002 and 2004. That is more than the total received by the second- through fourth-ranked universities combined. A large portion of that is due to the generous funding provided to the DFG Research Center Ocean Margins, which was established in 2001 at the University of Bremen.

Moreover, the University of Bremen as a whole, at the young age of 35 years, has steadily worked its way up: It reached position 23, an improvement of five places over its last ranking. According to the DFG, Bremen is “poised to leap ahead into the group of the 20 highest DFG-funded Universities in Germany”.

The 28 million Euros that flowed into Bremen geosciences make up 40% of the funds that the DFG allotted to Bremen. The Bremen social and engineering sciences also achieved outstanding results in the nationwide ranking. They each placed second in their field based on average funding per professor.

By the way, data reflecting the levels of direct project funding for research and development (R&D) by federal ministries, in particular the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, show Bremen at rank 6.
