Earth and Marine Sciences of the Highest Caliber

University geoscience departments are generally concerned with the study of the continents, but at the University of Bremen, the ocean is the focal point. This commitment to marine research began with a German Research Foundation (DFG) institute for study of the South Atlantic in 1989. In 2001 the DFG awarded funds for the Ocean Margins National Research Center, and Bremen’s Department of Geosciences
moved to the center of the international stage in marine research. In 2007, the exceptional concentration of expertise in Bremen was recognized as a “cluster of excellence” and awarded funding for the research unit, The Ocean in the Earth System.
