    Research interest

I am a member of the European Graduate College 'Proxies in Earth History' (EUROPROX) and am conducting my PhD project under the advice of Prof. Dr. Gerold Wefer and Dr. Torsten Bickert and with Dr. Gerald Ganssen (VU Amsterdam) as a project partner.

The EUROPROX approach of developing and testing indicators of past environmental changes (proxies) is mirrored in my personal research interest:
The basis of my work is the further improvement of the Mg/Ca temperature proxy in planktonic foraminifers. In a sediment study, I work on better understanding the ecology, calcification depth and seasonality of the planktonic foraminifers G. ruber, G. bulloides and G. inflata off NW Africa. In particular, I am interested in the Mg/Ca ratio of single shells of these species, as their short lifespan (~1 month) makes them potential recorders of short term temperature variations. Knowledge gained from this study is essential for the second part of my project. In this work, I apply the Mg/Ca proxy (as well as oxygen isotopes) of single shells of planktonic foraminifers to the sedimentary record. I wish to better describe the history of upwelling and water stratification off NW Africa since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Understanding of this oceanographic system is of particular interest to paleoclimatic research, as it constitutes one of the most productive areas of the oceans and may serve as an analog for other eastern-boundary upwelling systems.
