Servo Positioning Unit for the 2G Magnetometer

The Marine Geophysics Section has developed an new servo drive for realize a better probe positioning and a wider speed range for the 2G Enterprises cryogenic rock magnetometer.

By integrating newer gear generation in this system, with the advantages such as reliability, positioning accuracy, zero backlash, it has been possible to develop an compact servo positioning system. Due to the integrated zero switches in the system a high operational reliability is achieved and no additional linear measuring system is required.

Owing to the small number of components required for motion conversion, the number of disturbances are minimal, thus ensuring high quality positioning characteristics. This results in excellent repeat accuracy better than 0,01 mm. Because of their simple and rugged design, simple control characteristics and high stability under production conditions, these system are more superior than stepper motors in a wide range of applications and offer easy integration also in extreme operating environments such as high magnetic areas.

This design offers following advantages:

  • Sub-mm accuracy
  • Easy controllability for linear speed, torque and force
  • Absolute encoder
  • Highly dynamic performance
