Coastal Dynamics and Human Impact

Project D1

Constructional impacts on bedform dynamics

With sophisticated new instrumentation, especially a high-resolution multibeam echosounder and an acoustic Doppler current profiler, significant new insights into the dynamic behavior of dunes in tidal channels have been achieved.

Project D2

Suspended sediment flux in engineered estuaries

In some estuaries suspended matter occurs as "fluid mud" a highly concentrated sediment suspension of cohesive fine grained particles. This project aims at a process based description of suspension, transport and settling dynamics. The combined use of state-of-the-art acoustic instrumentation gives insight in the complex interactions between the suspended matter dynamics within the water column und the formation of fluid mud at the river bed.

Project D4

Geotechnical and geophysical seabed characterisation

With a special focus on assigned offshore construction sites (e.g. harbours or wind energy parks), the correlation of survey information with soil strength data, and the study of local offshore structure-seabed interactions in a morphodynamic and micromechanical sense is investigated.

Project D5

Morphodynamics and sediment budgets in coastal seas

This project explores the sediment transport mechanisms driving the morphodynamic evolution of near-coastal environments.
