ECORD Summer School 2012

The Topic
Earthquakes have devastating effects on heavily populated coastal areas from both, ground shaking and tsunami. Submarine landslides and catastrophic volcanic flank collapse (and associated tsunamis) pose additional significant risks to coastal the population and to seafloor infrastructure. Together, these processes comprise a significant large-scale natural hazard for which no short-term prediction methods exist.
Improving our understanding of when, where, and how large-scale earthquakes and slope failures occur, is one of the most urgent and challenging tasks faced by modern Earth science. Scientific ocean drilling is uniquely positioned to elucidate the underlying geologic processes that govern the nature and evolution of submarine earthquakes, faulting, and seafloor displacement processes through direct sampling and in situ measurement, including continuous real-time monitoring. more
Structure of the Summer School
One focus of the 12 day summer school are scientific lectures (incl. some topic-related lab exercises) and discussions. “Virtual Ship” exercises and practicals will introduce the participants to life as a shipboard scientist, including shipboard scientific methods and work flow during a drilling cruise investigating subseafloor deformation, stability and slip behavior through time.
Lectures and lab exercises of the summer school will be instructed both, by Bremen staff and by external experts from leading geoscientific institutions around the world, especially in Europe (see below) who will be invited to cover selected themes and to even more contribute to the added value of the overall topic of the planned 2012 summer school
On the weekend, in the middle of the summer school, a one-day field trip will be offered. During this trip, we will visit coastal protection infrastructures and discuss the preparedness to potential offshore geohazards in the low-lying coastal areas along the North Sea coast line. more

Registration
The deadline has passed on 11 May 2012.
We received 55 applications from 22 different countries.
A selection committee is currently reviewing the applications.
GLOMAR will offer 30 places in the ECORD Summer School 2012.
Please notice that - due to the limited number of places - it was not possible to register directly. The course fee is 100 €. Travel, accommodation and meals will be on your own costs.
Scholarships
Information about scholarships issued by ECORD:
Since 2007 ECORD provides 10 to 15 scholarships annually to allow young scientists to attend one of the ECORD Summer Schools. Applications from Students of non-ECORD European countries are also accepted.
The deadline for application to get an ECORD Scholarship has passed on 25 March 2012.
IODP-Canada will be offering scholarships for Canadian students to attend the summer school. Up to 5 scholarships are available, more information see here.

Accomodation
Accommodation as well as meals have to be covered by the participants directly.
A well suited accommodation place is the Hostel Townside that is located near the town centre. It is a good and
inexpensive alternative to the hotels. We have reserved 5-bed and 6-bed rooms for 12 nights (02.09. – 14.9.12)
for the participants of the ECORD Summer School.
In addition, there is a wide selection of hotels in Bremen.
Breakfast / Lunch can be obtained from the University Mensa in 3 minutes walking distance from the MARUM building.
The Venue
Bremen and its twin-city Bremerhaven are the key location for marine sciences with a number of very active university departments and non-university research institutions. At the University of Bremen MARUM stands out as the most important marine geological research unit. Relevant research training is organised by the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences (GLOMAR).
Located on the university campus, MARUM hosts the IODP Bremen Core Repository (BCR), the only IODP core repository in Europe.
