Research Interests
- History of the deep ocean circulation
- Evolution of African and South American climates
- Focus on the last 150 ka (in particular the Last Interglacial and last glacial inception)
- Paleoclimate proxies: planktic & benthic foraminifera, oxygen & carbon stable isotopes, trace elements (Mg/Ca), major elements (X-ray Fluorescence)
Current research
1. Reconstruct the position of the South American rainbelt and tropical Atlantic surface-water changes at the end of the Last Interglacial (within the EndLIG project).
2. Reconstruct the position of the African rainbelt at the demise of the Last Interglacial (period 130-100 ka). Relationships to deep-water changes in the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean.
3. Assess the factors influencing the geochemical composition of Atlantic hemipelagic sediments (modern times, Last Glacial Maximum).
Projects
EndLIG (DFG Interdynamik priority program): What ends an Interglacial? Feedbacks between tropical rainfall, Atlantic climate and ice sheets during the Last Interglacial.
Past4Future: This European project investigates the climate and environment of past warm periods (interglacials) to inform on future climate and possible abrupt changes.
THOR: Thermohaline Overturning – at Risk?
RETRO: Response of the Tropical Atlantic Surface and Intermediate Waters to Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.
