Research Area B "Coastal Zone Processes"

Continental margins, and especially coastal regions, are among the most dynamic areas in the world. In the last century human impact in the coastal zone has increased dramatically in both scale and rate: coastal zones being focal areas of rapidly increasing socio-economic pressures. In GLOMAR Research Area B, we address the different aspects of coastal/continental margin processes with a multidisciplinary focus. Our present research themes are:

  • Coastal sediment dynamics (e.g. modelling, dredging impacts on tidal inlet systems, sediment transport pathways),
  • Application of electromagnetic imaging (EM) to investigate the dynamics of continental shelf sediments,
  • Influences of sea-level changes and subsidence on sedimentary processes using seismo-acoustic stratigraphy
  • Seismo-acoustic investigations of shallow methane gas occurrences in shelf sediments
  • Reconstruction of palaeo-sedimentary processes (Pleistocene-Holocene) in the North Sea.
