Marine particles are found throughout the world oceans in all waterdepths. Sinking particles mainly consist of dead planktonic organisms. They play a key role in the global CO2 cycle. Their abundance and size in the water column can be aqcuired with the particle camera ParCa.

The particle images are processed onboard after the recovery of the system. An additionally mounted CTD probe measures temperature and salinity of the seawater.

Marine particles continuously sink from the ocean surface, where they are formed, down to the ocean bottom. This process resembles a snow fall and thus these particles are called Marine Snow.
