Mentoring Programme

Bremen University recently started a new mentoring programme for female scientists. Young researchers will cooperate with senior scientists to promote their career. MARUM is one of the institutional partners of the programme.

Dusty Sahara

In its serial X:enius ARTE TV aired a programme on dust export from the Sahara desert on February 9. The report features MARUM scientist Dr. Inka Meyer and can also be watched on the ARTE website.

DKK Statement

On February 6th the German Climate Consortium (Deutsches Klima-Konsortium - DKK) made a statement on the book "Die kalte Sonne: Warum die Klimakatastrophe nicht stattfindet" by F. Vahrenholt and S. Lüning.

Icy Records

In cooperation with Gothenburg University MARUM deployed an underwater observatory in a Swedish fjord. The instrument has been measuring the oxygen content of the fjord water – even under the current icy conditions.

Briese Research Award

MARUM researcher Dr. Tobias Goldhammer receives the Briese Research Award 2011 for his excellent PhD thesis. The award worth Euro 5,000 is donated by the shipping company Briese. Briese manages the medium sized German research vessels.

Our Blue Future

The German Marine Research Consortium KDM organized a special meeting of science ministers from Northern German and an exhibition on marine research which takes place in the European Parliament. Keynote speaker is best-selling author Frank Schätzing.

MARUM Research Award

Sebastian Hammerschmidt, Bernhard David A. Naafs and James Collins received the „MARUM Research Award for Marine Geosciences 2011“ for their outstanding research studies. The prize is endowed with a total of 3.000 euro.

Open Ship JOIDES Resolution

The US-American drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution finished expedition 339 in Lisbon. 600 politicians, scientists, and students visited the vessel during the port call. MARUM organized a very well attended media conference and a tour of the vessel for journalists.

From Genes to Ecosystem

On January 17th, 2012, the EuroMarine General Assembly will take place in Bremen. More than 100 international scientists of the EU multidisciplinary marine network EuroMarine meet for three days.

„Floating University“ started

From 6th until 15th of January 12 students from different universities in Germany and Namibia are onboard the research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN. They are taught by three scientists from the MARUM and GEOMAR and report on the expedition in a ship’s log.

Bighorn Basin Project

From January 9 to 27 sixteen scientists from four countries meet in the Bremen Core Repository of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. They analyze 917 metres of core which were drilled in Wyoming last summer in the framework of the Bighorn Basin Project.

Köppen Award

MARUM scientist Dr. Ines Heßler received the Köppen Award for Climate and Earth System Research 2012 for her excellent doctoral thesis on climate variations during the last glacial. The award is donated by the Cluster of Excellence CliSAP Hamburg.

MARUM on YouTube

Recently YouTube redesigned its website. Now MARUM TV appears in a new look. 86 short documentaries are available which cover MARUM`s three research fields, deep-sea technologies and fascinating underwater videos. Up to now more than 100,000 single views were registered.

German-French Alliance

Representatives of AWI, MARUM, CNRS, and Ifremer recently founded a European Research Group whose goal is to unify and develop the competence of engineers, technicians, and scientists of these marine institutes in the field of underwater technologies.

Atlantic Remote Control

A team of MARUM scientists studied changes in the Southern African water cycle during the last 17 000 years. The results of their study are published in the December 22nd issue of the magazine Nature.

GLOMAR Best Paper Award 2011

This year’s awardee of the „Best Paper Award“ from the Graduate School GLOMAR is Anna-Maria Hubert. The prize endowed with 1000 Euro was given to her in the course of this year’s GLOMAR graduation at MARUM on December 13th.

Tara Oceans Expedition

The December issue of the GEO magazine relates the European expedition onboard the French research sailing vessel Tara off Galapagos Islands in spring 2011. Chief scientist Stéphane Pesant from the MARUM and his team investigated the plankton diversity.

A New Seafloor Drill Rig

The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research now approved an application to build a new seafloor drill rig which will be able to retrieve up to 200 metre long cores. The federal grant adds up to about 7.4 million Euros.

Traces of Life

Recently nano, the science magazine of the public TV station 3sat, reported about MARUM`s deep sea reserach at the interface of geology and biology. The report presented biomarker research activities currently performed in the working group of Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs.

Mass Extinction Chronology

In the current edition of Science magazine an international team of scientists, among them MARUM geochemist Dr. Xiao-lei Liu, describes the course of the end-Permian mass extinction 252 million years ago with unprecedented accuracy.

40th Anniversary

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Bremen University an exhibition was opened in a mutual savings bank in Bremen on November 14. MARUM provides exhibits covering subjects like methane hydrates and sea floor mapping.

Sahara Dust

These days a team of the Arte science magazine X:enius worked at MARUM. Together with Dr. Inka Meyer the TV team shoot a piece on dust from the Sahara which will be aired early next year.

Ice Age Impressions

Until December 8 the Department of Geosciences presents soil profiles from the last ice age. The exhibits were prepared during a co-operation between Bremen geoscientists and a secondary school class in the nearby town of Ritterhude.
