Report of GLOMAR PhD student Qian Yu about his participation in the 27th Meeting of the International Association of Sedimentologists at Alghero, Italy, 20-23 September 2009

The 27th Meeting of the International Association of Sedimentologists took place at Alghero, Island of Sardinia, Italy, from the 20th to the 23rd of September 2009. The meeting is the annual meeting of IAS, which is the main scientific association on sedimentology in the world, and it focuses on the theoretical and applied study of sedimentology. About 700 people (including the five continents) are registered and 300 talks and 350 posters were demonstrated in the meeting.

I provided an oral presentation at the meeting on the session T7b “The factors influencing sedimentary deposits in the coastal zone”, which is mostly related to my PHD project. The presentation obtained good feedback from the science community, and then constructional discussion was held with some experts on this presentation, e.g., Dr. M. Z. Li from Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), Canada, and Dr. S. Cappucci from ENEA, Italy. The communications with abroad sedimentologists offered me the chance to know the state of the art about my research field. Especially borrowing from the works of some Italian sedimentologists on sedimentological processes of Italian coastal lagoons (e. g., Venice lagoon), some new ideas generated for the German Wadden Sea, which is my study area.

I would like to thank GLOMAR for the possibility to participate in this conference.

Qian Yu
