Marine Public Relations in Europe
On Monday and Tuesday of this week more than a dozen experts in the field of press and public relations from seven European marine research institutes met in Straßburg. Meeting at the office of the European Science Foundation (ESF), they discussed joint PR activities. The group will take part in the EUROCEAN Congress, planned for May 2004 in Galway, Ireland, presenting aspects of publicity work. Among others, the press officer for the DFG Research Center will make a presentation during the closing meeting on the topic of science communication.

Further plans include the creation of a poster series on important aspects of European marine science. A few examples of these are microbial life below the sea floor, mud volcanos on the ocean floor, and the connections between climate development and ocean currents. The group will also compile background material on the subject of science communication.

The joint forum for the experts who met in Straßburg is the Marine Science Board of the ESF. This was founded in 1995, and it devises strategies for European marine science, publishes position papers on key marine science issues, and improves access to scientific infrastructures such as research ships. The group meeting in Straßburg is designated as the "Communication Group" of the Marine Board.
