MARE INCOGNITUM
Clearly we need to learn more about the workings of the Earth's climate, and the role of the Arctic. But because of its inaccessibility, the Arctic Ocean represents a major gap in our understanding of ocean-atmosphere processes. No sedimentary records of any substantial length have been recovered from the Arctic. Now, however, ACEX scientists are finally poised to fill this gap. By sampling the 500 metre-thick sedimentary cap atop the Lomonosov Ridge close to the North Pole, scientists will reveal the climatic and environmental history of the Arctic, a critical missing episode in the global climate story.
