"Biogeochemistry of saline environments - the Messinian and modern settings compared"
This work is a project of the European Graduate Collage 'Proxies in Earth History' (EUROPROX, phase III).
Its main goal is to improve the understanding of biogeochemical processes in saline to hypersaline environments of the Mediterranean in the Messinian (Late Miocene) using lipid biomarker and stable isotope analysis, as well as petrographical examination. A major focus is the investigation of the origin of abundant filamentous structures in carbonate and gypsum samples and their possible significance for the microbial activity.
