Subject of PhD thesis
"Biogeochemistry of deposits from the Miocene –case studies from the Monterey Formation of California and Messinian deposits of the Mediterranean”
This work is a project of the European Graduate College 'Proxies in Earth History' (EUROPROX, phase III).
The work is separated into two parts. One goal is to examine the significance of biogeochemical processes in saline to hypersaline environments of the Mediterranean in the Messinian (Late Miocene). A major focus is the investigation of the origin of abundant filamentous structures in carbonate and gypsum samples and their possible meaning for microbial activity. Another part focuses on the possible impact of microbial activity on the formation of diagenetic dolomite concretions from the Monterey Formation of California (Late to Middle Miocene).
The main methods used are lipid biomarker and stable isotope analyses (by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry), as well as petrographical examinations.
