Influence of environmental factors on molecular isotopic signals

Effect of evapo-transpiration on hydrogen isotope compositions of leaf water and plant waxes of terrestrial plants

By conducting greenhouse experiments and sampling along aridity gradients in natural environments, the influence of relative humidity on leaf water and plant wax lipid hydrogen isotope compositions is investigated.

People involved:

  • Ansgar Kahmen (ETH Zurich)
  • Dirk Sachse, Bernd Hoffmann (University of Potsdam)
  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Jason West (Texas A&M University)
  • Lucas Cernusak (ANU Canberra)

Effect of salinity and growth rate on hydrogen isotope fractionation of Emiliania huxleyi

By conducting growth experiments with algal cultures of Emiliania huxleyi, we investigate the influence of vaiable salinity and growth rate on hydrogen isotope fractionation between culture waters and alkenones.

People involved:

  • Kate French (MIT/WHOI)
  • Albert Benthien, Jelle Bijma (AWI Bremerhaven)
  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)

Effect of growth rate on stable carbon isotope fractionation of Emiliania huxleyi

We investigated the effects of variable groth rates on stable carbon isotope compositions of alkenones of the algae Emiliania huxleyi in a series of culture experiments.

People involved:

  • Sarah Febiri, Kai Schulz, Ulf Riebesell (IFM-Geomar)
  • Albert Benthien, Jens Hefter (AWI Bremerhaven)
  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
