    Abstract

The research focus of this MARUM fellowship is the radiocarbon dating of archaeal intact polar lipids. Elucidation of the carbon sources and turnover of archaeal intact polar lipids (IPLs) in marine subsurface sediments is essential to understand the deep biosphere and applicability of the archaeal paleotemperature proxies. Supported by Profs Kai-Uwe Hinrichs and Gesine Mollenhauer in the MARUM, the proposed project aims towards 1) developing isolation and purification methods for compound-specific radiocarbon dating on archaeal IPLs; 2) using IPL-radiocarbon approach to track the carbon substrates of benthic archaea; and 3) constraints on the deep biosphere’s impact on the TEX86 paleothermometer.
