About GLOMAR


At the beginning of the 21st century humanity faces changes of global dimensions. These changes refer to much more than environmental aspects such as a changing climate. They encompass the entire Earth system with its physical, ecological, biogeochemical and societal processes, ranging from changing weather patterns to species extinction, and from cultural and economical globalization to human migration.

A key role in the Earth’s system is played by the oceans, giving the ‘Blue Planet’ its colourfull appearance. Even though more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, the oceans are still the least known geo-ecosystem. This is especially remarkable since they host the majority of all life forms on Earth. The oceans are a key player in the global climate system. They offer living and non-living resources and they serve as a main traffic route for global logistics fuelling a globalised economy. Finally, about two thirds of the world’s population lives in coastal regions. People benefit strongly from the oceans’ resources. On the other hand, they are at risk from hazards like storm surges and tsunamis.

 

There are many challenges to society to be tackled in the future. On the one hand, the impact of global climate change on the environment is already visible today and is likely to be amplified in the future. On the other hand, exploitation and use of ocean and coastal resources and space are part of the globalisation process. The increasing diversity of problems and conflicts of interests require interdisciplinary and international cooperations among researchers from all disciplines.

Objectives of the Graduate School

GLOMAR aims to educate excellent young scientists who are able to tackle the challenges in a changing world and thereby advance the field of marine sciences. The objectives of the graduate school are

  • to provide PhD students with the best possible training in
    marine sciences for a successful career in academia, industry
    or administration,
  • to advance the field of marine global change research
    by preparing a new generation of marine scientists
    (in terms of e.g., interdisciplinarity, internationality) and
  • to add to the understanding of global change in the
    marine realm by publishing scientific results in peer
    reviewed international journals.

The Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences -GLOMAR- hosts doctoral students enrolled at the University of Bremen with a PhD project in or associated with marine sciences.
