PhD thesis
Hydrocarbon-driven element cycling at cold seeps: from microbial to global scales
The impact of marine hydrocarbon seeps on oceanic element budgets is poorly constrained. This project will seek a more robust understanding of the fluxes of carbon and other elements and their partitioning into biomass, sediments, and water. I will study seep environments in several of the major ocean basins. The scope will range from global to molecular scales and will seek to address questions such as:
Global to regional scale: How relevant are emissions of seep-related chemical species for oceanic element cycles and how do they differ between seep types?
Ecosystem scale: How are flux, assimilation, and turnover of hydrocarbons linked with biomass build-up and carbon burial at different seep types?
Ecosystem to molecular scale: How are the diversities of microbial communities and carbon-flow patterns linked to regimes of fluid flow and seepage?
Techniques include quantitative and isotopic analysis of carbon-bearing compounds in seep sediments and fluids. Instruments: HPLC/MS, GC/MS, LCirMS, GCirMS

Master thesis
Investigation of Intact Polar Lipids of Bacteria Isolated from the Deep Marine Subsurface
ODP Leg 201 Scientific Results
Microorganisms thriving in deeply buried sediments amount to possibly one tenth of Earths biomass. Not yet fully understood are the complex biogeochemical processes occuring in this deep biosphere and their global influence.
In my master thesis I tried to shed light into some of the deep biosphere research questions. For this I analyzed intact polar lipids (IPLs) of bacteria cultured from deep sea sediments, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 201 and their respective sediment horizones. The IPL-biomarker analysis was conducted with HPLC/MSn.
