Ecosystem signals in modern environments

Lipid isotope signals in soils along an altitude transect in Ethiopia

We investigate the lipid distributions and their isotopic signals along an altitudinal transect of soils in Ethiopia

People involved:

  • Janet Rethemeyer (University of Cologne)
  • Stefan Schouten (NIOZ)
  • Pascal Boeckx (University of Ghent)
  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)

Continental-scale analysis of hydrologic signals in plant lipids in African soils

Using widely distributed top-soil samples from Africa, we investigate the relation of plant wax hydrogen isotope compositions to precipitation, temperature and vegetation type on a continental-scale.

People involved:

  • James Collins, Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Pascal Boeckx (University of Ghent)
  • Johan Weijers (University of Utrecht)

Dust-transported vegetation and hydrologic signals in lipids of marine aerosols

Terrigenous lipid distributions and their isotopic signals are investigated in marine aerosols collected during research cruises.

People involved:

  • Matthias Zabel, Jan-Berend Stuut, Lydie Dupont, Rony Kuechler, Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Tim Eglinton (ETH Zurich)

Hydrologic signals in plant waxes of aerosols from a terrestrial ecosystem

We collected aerosols on a meteorologic observation tower in the Hainich National Park (Thuringia) to investigate how organic isotope signals in aerosols are generated.

People involved:

  • Alexander Knohl (University of Goettingen)
  • Dirk Sachse (University of Potsdam)
  • Ansgar Kahmen (ETH Zurich)
  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)

Reflection of continental vegetation and hydrology in lipids of continental-margin sediments off Africa

By investigating marine surface sediments collected along continental-margins off Africa, we study how continental vegetation and hydrologic conditions are reflected in marine sedimentary archives.

People involved:

  • James Collins, Enno Schefuss, Stefan Mulitza (MARUM)
  • Angela Vogts, Juergen Rullkoetter (ICBM Oldenburg)

Hydrologic signals in organic matter sources to Laguna Potrok Aike, Patagonia

By investigating the lipid distributions and their isotopic signals in organic matter sources (higher plants, soils, aquatic macrophytes, cyanobacterial mats) of Laguna Potrok Aike (S-Patagonia) we aim to develop molecular isotopic tracers for past hydrologic changes.

People involved:

  • Katja Hockun, Gesine Mollenhauer, Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Christoph Mayr (University of Erlangen)
  • Andreas Luecke (FZ Juelich)
  • Bernd Zolitschka (University of Bremen)

Age of terrestrial lipids in estuarine sediments of the Congo River

By conducting compound-specific stable isotope and radiocarbon analyses we investigate the climatic and vegetation signals and the age of terrigenous plant lipids in surface sediments of the Congo River estuary.

People involved:

  • Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Tim Eglinton (ETH Zurich)

Lipid signatures of suspended particulate matter of the Congo River

By conducting monthly sampling of suspended particulate material from the Congo River at various locations, we investigate the seasonal fluxes and the climatic and vegetation signals carried by terrigenous lipids exported by large tropical rivers.

People involved:

  • Gesine Mollenhauer, Matthias Zabel, Enno Schefuss (MARUM)
  • Pascal Boeckx (University of Ghent)
  • Jose Nlandu Wabakanghanzi (DRC)
