A HOME FOR MARINE RESEARCH - Laying the foundation stone on the University Campus
Just under two years ago the German Research Foundation (DFG) awarded Bremen the highly endowed "Research Center Ocean Margins". As a "Center of Excellence" in the field of marine research it offers jobs for over 100 employees. In the meantime, new professorships have been filled, junior professors have been appointed and numerous young scientists and technicians have been recruited. The shady side of the success: with each new recruitment the space shortage increased.
However, a solution is in sight: soon the staff of the Research Center can to look forward to new premises. You are cordially invited to attend the laying of the foundation stone for the new building in the Leobener Straße which will take place on Monday, May 5th at 5 pm.
- Willi Lemke, Senator for Education and Science;
- Prof. Dr. Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker, President of the German Research Foundation, and
- Prof. Dr. Gerold Wefer, Director of the Research Center
will be on site to give information.
The building, comprising a total of more than 6000 square metres spread over three floors, houses offices, workshops, laboratories, lecture facilities, as well as a 750 square metre equipment store and a large cool store covering alone 1000 square metres to accomodate the sediment core repository of the international Ocean Drilling Program which up until now was situated in the port of Bremen. In addition, an exhibition area of 200 square metres is provided for in the entrance hall. The building will be crowned by a metal roof in the form of a wave. This striking architectural feature symbolizes the object of research of the scientists and technicians who work there: the ocean. In addition, the wave gives the building with its bluish-red brickwork a certain air of lightness and elegance. The plans of the building, which should be completed by the end of 2004, can be downloaded. Please klick the design plan below.
We would be very pleased to be able to welcome you to the official laying of the foundation stone followed by some snacks. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
