20 years Geosciences at the University of Bremen

A story of success

Commemorative event on May 19th , 2006

An especially bright light within the Bremen science community is sent out by the Geosciences. The department celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 19th, with a commemorative event. Reasons to rejoice are numerous: Over the last 20 years the geosciences went from strength to strength. Already three years after its inception the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft accorded the special research project “The South Atlantic in the Late Quarternary”. Shortly afterwards this was followed by the graduate study programm “material flux in marine geosystems”. This was then superseded by the European Graduate College Proxies in Earth History (EUROPROX).

In 1994 the Bremen Core Repository was established to hold the cores from the Ocean Drilling Program, now Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. There are only three of these repositories worldwide. The crowning of the scientific development so far was the establishment of the Research Center Ocean Margins funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The geosciences department in close cooperation with the MARUM - Center for marine environmental sciences also plays a vital role in the good standing the University of Bremen has in the competition for funds from the excellence initiative.
