And another new PhD student
For a second time this year, we like to welcome a new member in our working group. Sanja Asendorf started her PhD in December 2012. Her thesis project is part of INTERCOAST an International Research Training Group based on the collaboration between the universities in Bremen and Waikato. The topic of her PhD will be the reconstruction of the anthropogenic impact during the last millennium within the two key regions of INTERCOAST - the German Bight and the Bay of Plenty (Tauranga Harbour) in New Zealand. For this purpose she will analyse sedimentary records from both areas by a variety of methods (e.g., stratigraphy, XRF, sedimentology, organic carbon cycle). Her supervisors is D. Hebbeln. WELCOME and GOOD LUCK!

Northern German Research Award 2012
Norddeutscher Wissenschaftspreis 2012
Our group (working on cold-water coral ecosystems) has been nominated for the final round of the Northern German Science Award with an endowment of 50,000 Euros. The ultimate winner will be chosen out of three finalists in Hamburg on November 29th. The application of our group (in cooperation with GEOMAR, Kiel and Senckenberg am Meer, Wilhelmshaven) is entitled:
"KaltwasserkorallenâÖkosysteme entlang der europäischen Kontinentalhänge. Vom Biodiversitäts-„Hotspot“ zum geologischen Archiv".

Article about our RV Maria S. Merian cruise MSM20-4 in 'bild der wissenschaft'
Our RV Maria S. Merian cruise MSM20-4 to study cold-water coral ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Straits was accompanied by the journalist Thomas Willke. He now published an article about the cruise and the work onboard in the German public scientific journal 'bild der wissenschaft' (issue: October 2012): "Expedition ins Korallenland: Mit der FS Maria S. Merian auf großer Fahrt in die Karibik" (p. 40-49). See also: Cruise blog of MSM20-4!

New PhD student
We like to welcome a new member in our working group. Cornelia Kwiatkowski started her PhD in July 2012 and will work on the "Climate history of the Java Sea during the late Holocene and its relationship to human activity in Java and Kalimantan". By applying various methods to reconstruct the palaeo-environment (radiocarbon dating, stable isotope and trace element analyses, XRF), she aims to (I) assess late Holocene regional climate variability recorded in sediments of the Java Sea, (II) estimate the human impact on the riverine discharge from Java and Kalimantan Islands, and (III) untangle the interfering influences of anthropogenic forcing and natural climate. Her supervisors are M. Mohtadi and D. hebbeln. WELCOME and GOOD LUCK!

RV Sonne cruise SO221
In May and June 2012, RV Sonne set sail to a cruise dedicated to study changes in the East Asian summer monsoon. This expedition aims to sample highly resolved marine climate archives using the Bremen Sea Floor Drill Rig (MeBo) in the northern South China Sea and is organised by Dr. Mahyar Mohtadi (chief scientist) and Dr. Stephan Steinke.
----
During the current cruise a new record has been set, the team reached a drilling depth of 80.85 m with the MeBo - more than ever before! Overall, 350 core metres were collected during the cruise. Congratulations!!

Poster price
During this years "Bremen PhD Days in Marine Sciences 2012" held on April 18-19 at Schloss Etelsen Lelia Matos won the 1st price for her poster "Back to the future or the story of cold-water corals' distribution in the North Atlantic" presenting first results about her studies on cold-water corals in the western Atlantic Ocean (North Carolina margin). Congratulations Lelia!!

5th International Symposium on Deep-Sea Corals 2012 - ISDSC
1.-7. April 2012, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The ISDSC has become the major conference for all aspects of cold-water coral research. In 2012, ISDSC 5 was hosted and organized by the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Royal NIOZ) and took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Find out more on www.deepseacoral.nl.
Our working group joint this important conference with following presentations:
Dr. Markus Eisele: "Growth of a cold-water coral mound – coral framework accumulation versus deposition of hemipelagic sediments". Dr. Hiske Fink: "High productivity during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene triggered intense cold-water coral growth in the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea)". Dr. Jürgen Titschack: "Carbonate budget of cold-water coral mounds: First results from the Norwegian and Mediterranean Seas". Dr. Claudia Wienberg: "The Great Wall of(f) Mauritania: Cold-water corals in an upwelling region".
