GLOMAR course:
Tourism's impacts and strategies in coastal destinations

Objectives
Coastal lines are of special interest of the tourism market. On the one hand, there is an
economic interest in maintaining and developing the tourism industry on coastal destinations
as strong as possible. On the other hand, these ecological sensitive areas with many unique
plants and animal species in the water as well as onshore are endangered because of a lack
of strategic planed sustainable tourism.
A (better) understanding of these conflicts and their solutions is the main topic of the course.
The course will deal with:
- An overview about tourism in general and a special focus on coastal destinations,
- Conflicts between economic and ecological interests, that is tourism industry and
environmental interest groups,
- Developing solutions in form of a masterplan for several islands in order to establish a
sustainable tourism, getting to know instruments for an environmental management.
