Dr. Timothy Ferdelman

As a research scientist Department of Biogeochemistry at the Max-Planck-Institiute for Marine Microbiology, my research interests center on microbial and chemical aspects of the sulphur cycle, and on how the sulphur cycle interacts with other important redox and nutrient elements such as iron, carbon, and phosphorus. Tools to investigate the biogeochemistry of modern marine environments include a range of chemical analytical techniques, radiotracers and stable isotope. The biogeochemistry of the seafloor and sub-seafloor ocean has been the focus of my research over the last ten years. I have been active in the area of sub-seafloor life research within ODP/IODP including participation on three IODP/ODP expeditions, Meteor/MeBo sub-seafloor drilling, including the recent IODP Expedition329 to the ultra-oligotrophic South Pacific Gyre.
I have been a member of MARUM/DFG Research Centre since its founding in 2001. Presently, I am involved in the Biogeochemistry research areas together with Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs and Dr. Mathias Zabel.
