Report of Guest PhD student Pernille Louise Forsberg about her research placement at MARUM from October - December 2016

From October until December 2016 I had the pleasure to undertake a research placement at MARUM in the Coastal Dynamics group led by Dr. Christian Winter. I was supported financially by the GLOMAR Research Placement programme.

The goal of the research placement was to progress with data analysis for my current research. I am on the third and final year of my PhD project, which is centered around a Danish coastal lagoon in Fehmarnbelt, i.e. Rødsand lagoon. The lagoonal system is investigated through a combination of three different scientific approaches, namely field experiments, laboratory studies and numerical modelling. During the research stay at MARUM I carried out detailed analyses of recently collected field data from Rødsand lagoon under the supervision of members in the research group and with the aid of customized workflow packages developed by the Coastal Dynamics working group.

The motivation to go to MARUM on a research placement was to learn and gain experiences from the knowledge and expertise on the topic of flow and fine-grained sediment dynamics that the working group holds, and which is the main focus of my Ph.D. project.

MARUM has a very welcoming atmosphere and I felt at home straight away. I had my own desk space with all necessary utilities in a shared room with a postdoc from the same research group.
During my stay I attended two courses and monthly research seminars, which were all rewarding experiences. I gave a presentation about my current research at the November research seminar as well. I would like to sincerely thank MARUM and GLOMAR for giving me the opportunity to carry out the research placement.
