Thomas Lorscheid

Report of GLOMAR PhD student Thomas Lorscheid about his participation in the MOPP-MEDFLOOD kick-off workshop in Bremen, Germany from 8 - 9 September 2016

The MEDFLOOD project was started in 2012 and aimed to bring together Geoscientists and Archeologists working with past sea levels in the Mediterranean. Now this project was funded by the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) for another four years under the name MOPP-MEDFLOOD and includes also other scientist working around sea level and modelling of all related processes and is not any longer restricted only to the Mediterranean. The kick-off meeting of this second phase was held at MARUM and ZMT at the 08/09 September 2016. Around 25 participants mainly from the Mediterranean countries and Germany, but also from Australia and Canada came to Bremen and presented their current research.

The first day was mainly focused on archeological and Holocene sea-level research in the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia and on general observing techniques. The second day was dedicated to Pleistocene sea-level studies and hydrodynamic modelling. On this day, I could also present the first part of my PhD project about the Pleistocene sea-level highstand in Mallorca and how the interpretation of sea-level indicators can be improved by modelling modern beach processes. I got very valuable feedback and some of the participants working with similar indicators were interested to apply this approach in their study areas.

As this meeting was hosted by my working group, I was also included in the organization of the meeting. My responsibility was mainly the organization of the non-scientific needs, including the accommodation for supported early-career scientists, as well as for setup and booking of rooms for the meeting. We organized also two social event on the evenings before both days. An informal get-together was held in the Viertel on the first evening and a more official social dinner took place on the second evening at an Italian restaurant near the Weser.

The small size and the composition of participants with mainly early-career scientists during this meeting was very helpful and it was easy to get in contact with scientist working in the same area or with similar methods. Therefore this short but specialized meeting was very helpful for presenting my own research but also for networking.
