Report of GLOMAR PhD student Markus Loher about his participation in the 13th Conference on Gas in Marine Sediments in Tromsø, Norway from 19 - 22 September 2016

Conference structure
The "Gas In Marine Sediments 13" (GIMS13) conference was held from September 19 to 22, 2016, hosted by CAGE - Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and took place at the Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø, Norway.

The GIMS13 involved 7 sessions of talks, three poster presentations and several key note talks. A great feature was that it was organised without any overlapping sessions so that all talks and presentations could be followed by all attendees. Whereas key note talks were scheduled for 40 min, 20 min was allocated for regular talks (including question time).

My personal benefits of participation at the GIMS13 included discussions about my research with experienced scientists in the fields of gas seepage, mud volcanoes and also porewater geochemistry. It was great to be able to talk to authors in person, whose papers I have been reading in the context of my PhD. Thanks to my participation at the Gordon Research Conference earlier this year, I could also renew contacts with colleagues and friends from research institutes around the world.

My contribution at GIMS13
During the GIMS13, I presented a talk entitled "Deep-seated fluid seepage at the Venere mud volcano - Calabrian accretionary wedge". After the talk I was engaged by several questions concerning the presented data and discussions continued throughout the following coffee break. I was encouraged to try and pin-point the geochemical processes involved at the Venere mud volcano more precisely and several specific suggestions were made which could indeed be feasible to attempt in my future work. As a personal highlight on the last day of the conference, I was honoured with one of the two "Best Student Talk" awards.

Experiences
The GIMS13 as confronted by a wide range of research topics whereby new data and advances in the fields of gas and gas hydrate research were presented. Personally, I gained a good perspective on my own research focus and the relevance of my PhD study as well as the research carried out in our research group was highlighted. More specifically, I recognized again the value and opportunities which are provided at the MARUM in terms of interdisciplinary and multi-method approaches to study marine geology.

Furthermore, I feel more familiar with the work and scope of the scientific community. The exchange with other PhD students was also very fruitful and as also senior scientists were easily approachable. The structure of the GIMS13 allowed plenty of time to network, interact socially and enjoy the city of Tromsø with its northern lights.

In summary, the GIMS13 was a conference offering a good platform to disseminate new scientific results and an opportunity to present my new data. I am very grateful to GLOMAR for supporting my participation. The social atmosphere and easy structure of the conference allowed for inspiring discussions and a great networking opportunity.
