Report of GLOMAR PhD student Igor Venancio about his participation in the International Conference on Paleoceanography in Utrecht, Netherlands from 29 August - 2 September 2016
The 12th International Conference on Paleoceanography (ICP12) took place at the beautiful city of Utrecht in the Netherlands from the 28th of August to the 2nd of September of 2016. The conference happens only once every three years and it was an unique opportunity to be in contact with the recent works on the field of paleoceanography.
The ICP12 with almost 700 participants was composed oral and poster sessions taking into account the most relevant topics of paleoceanography. The invited speakers presented the state of the art of the scientific work on this field. The talks were also a possibility to recognize what are the main open questions and the main focus of the different research groups around the world. In addtion, the conference also offered the opportunity for presenting posters on several topics. The poster sessions were an ideal moment to discuss with other researchers and get their feedbacks about my own work. In the conference, I presented a poster on the session 2: "Paleo proxies: Development, Calibration, and Application". My poster entitled “Seasonality in the shell flux and oxygen isotopic composition of planktonic foraminifera in the southwestern Atlantic” is part of my PhD thesis and I received many constructive comments from other researchers regarding the interpretations of the dataset and also some new ideas have emerged during the discussions.
In general, the ICP12 was an outstanding conference. Besides the scientific program, the social events were also very well organized and I enjoyed my stay at Utrecht. One of the most interesting social events was definitely the “paleomusicology concert”, where several scientists demonstrated their music skills.
