Report of GLOMAR PhD student Lucy Schlicht about her participation in the Goldschmidt Conference 2019 in Barcelona, Spain from 18 to 23 August

The participation in the Goldschmidt Conference 2019 that was held in Barcelona from 18th to 23rd August 2019 was a great experience on scientific and personal level. The conference is one of the largest in the field of geochemistry worldwide and following offered an excellent environment to present my results as well as to get in contact with other scientists of relating research fields and hear their interesting talks.

At the conference, I gave a four minute flash talk to present the major outcomes of my research on “Boron isotopes of hydrothermally altered crust of the Brothers volcano (Kermadec Arc, New Zealand)” and a poster presentation on the same topic that gave space for more detailed discussions. Both presentations were held in the session 10i: “Seafloor Hydrothermal Systems: Geologic Controls and Biogeochemical Fluxes”, so a highly specialized audience on seafloor hydrothermal systems attended and I got very helpful suggestions how to advance the interpretations of my results and how to place my findings in the overall picture of submarine hydrothermal processes. In addition, I was very interested to hear about the results of other research studies I contributed to that were presented by Christian Hansen, Jill McDermott and Olivier Rouxel and to discuss about my data with collaboration partners of other running projects. Especially, I am glad about the great opportunity to meet many scientists that participated with me in IODP Expedition 376 to the Brothers volcano in the last year to talk about their findings so far and develop new ideas and scientific starting points.

Summarized, the attendance in the Goldschmidt conference offered me great opportunities to present my studies, to get deeper knowledge of the state-of-the-art research and establish new contacts or rather intensify already existing research collaborations. I kindly thank GLOMAR for the financial support.
