Report of GLOMAR PhD student Natalie Höppner about her participation in the 10th South American Symposium on Isotope Geology (SSAGI) in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico from 22 - 25 May 2016

The South American Symposium on Isotope Geology (SSAGI) is held once every two years in various countries on the South American continent. This year was the 10th anniversary. This marked also the first time the SSAGI was held outside of South America to strengthen the bond with the Latin American isotope community. In 2018 the conference will take place in Bolivia. The SSAGI is a small conference of about 100-150 participants. There is one central oral session and most of the contributions are presented in poster form.

The SSAGI was the very first conference I attended. I was surprised and honored to get the opportunity to give an oral presentation. I presented part of my PhD thesis under the title “Radiogenic isotope signatures of a sediment core and suspended particulate matter of the Amazon River system – A provenance and paleoclimate study” on the last conference day. I met a lot of interesting people and got very useful advice from scientist who have been working in the Amazon basin for years. Because there were no parallel running events, I could enjoy all off the offered talks and posters I was interested in. I especially enjoyed the contributions in the field of archeometry that combine traditional isotope studies with non-geological topics like human or animal migration.

Beside the scientific program, the organized social events were very delightful. They gave a good opportunity to get in contact with the other participants in a relaxed atmosphere, while enjoying good food and the Mexican culture. Overall, the conference was an exciting and valuable experience. I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support.
