Report of GLOMAR PhD student Samir Al Jbour about his participation in the 5th International Jellyfish Bloom Symposium in Barcelona, Spain from 29 May – 3 June 2016

The 5th International Jellyfish Bloom Symposium is the largest jellyfish specialist meeting in the world. It was held at the Aquàrium of Barcelona, Spain, in the period between 30th May and 3rd June 2016. The conference offered various and highly specialized sessions, such as e.g. environmental drivers of natural and problematic jellyfish blooms, challenges in jellyfish research and how to deal with these problems, and post-bloom impacts on the marine environment.

Interestingly, many talks were about benefiting from the problematic jellyfish blooms, namely using them as fertilizer and as sources of many bioactive compounds.

I have got the chance to present the first set of my PhD work at the symposium in an oral presentation entitled “ETS rates and oxygen consumption of Cassiopea sp. in response to acute and chronic temperature change“. It was an exciting experience to share my findings with a large number of specialist in the field. I have received some comments on my talk and my work in general. These comments will definitely help me in writing the manuscript about my findings.

The five days conference was opened every day by a great talk from one of the invited speakers on the highlighted topics. About 124 oral presentations (53% talking about schyphozoa), and 85 poster presentations have been presented by scientists and students from all over the world. This large number of highly focused presentations gave the chance for every jellyfish scientist to enjoy the conference sessions.

My participation in the 5th international jellyfish symposium gave me the chance to begin building my scientific network, and to be updated and be aware about what is new in jellyfish research and where the hot spots of jellyfish research in the world are located.

Personally, I would recommend the conference for every jellyfish scientist or student who are interested in jellyfish. The next meeting will be held in South Africa in 2019.

I would like to thank ZMT and GLOMAR for their financial support for my participation in the conference. And also special thanks to my supervisors for their help all the way to Spain.
