Scientific Interests and Goals:

The oceans play an important role in regulating the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Approximately 93 percent of all carbon dioxide is found in the oceans. However, the carbon dioxide can not be considered removed from the atmosphere until it has been turned into organic matter by phytoplankton and transported to the deep parts of the ocean.
My main research is investigating the importance of fluxes from settling particles/aggregates in the carbon cycle. These investigations both take place laboratory, where the general understandings of the governing mechanisms are found, and on ship cruises, especially at the upwelling zone west of Cape Blanc, Africa. The goal of my research is to understand the processes regulating the storage of carbon dioxide in the oceans.
