My research combines the study of marine microfossils with investigations of biological and ecological processes among their living representatives. These studies are based on a range of methods including molecular genetics, bioinformatics, plankton and sediment sampling, statistics, geochemistry, and marine geology. Using Foraminifera as a model system, I try to unravel how species of marine plankton evolve, what controls their success in marine ecosystems and how they have reacted to past periods of global change. I then attempt to transfer this knowledge on the development of methods for reconstructing past oceanic environments from microfossils. This research is tied with multidisciplinary studies of Quaternary palaeoclimatology in marginal oceanic basins, such as the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, or the Baffin Bay, which are particularly revealing for the understanding of the biotic response to global change in the past as well as for the understanding of climate change processes at large. Such research requires international collaboration. To this end, I am currently co-chairing the SCOR working group 138 on modern planktonic Foraminifera and ocean changes; I am member of the PMIP3 steering committee and co-convener of the MARGO group. In 2007–2010 I have served as the President of The Micropalaeontological Society.
