    PhD project

Sources, identities, and proxy potential of novel ubiquitous ether lipids in marine sediments

    Project page: DARCLIFE

My research project is connected with the interdisciplinary project ‘Deep subsurface Archaea: carbon cycle, life strategies, and role in sedimentary ecosystems’ (DARCLIFE). The main objectives of this project are to get detailed information about the factors that control the distribution of benthic archaea in marine sedimentary systems and their role within the carbon cycle. This frontier research will constrain the role of benthic archaea in the Earth system and examine the fundamental properties of life at minimum energy. My aim within this project is on the one hand to improve analytical methods for the detection of archaeal and bacterial membrane lipids and on the other hand to identify novel and ubiquitous lipids in subsurface sediments, to investigate their source and to examine possible proxy potential of the novel lipids. Sediment cores and samples for my project have been collected during RV Meteor cruise M84/1 (DarcSeas) from the eastern Mediterranean, Sea of Marmara and southern Black Sea, providing an ideal set of environmentally diverse settings in close proximity. These settings include anoxic to oxic and slightly brackish to saline and even hypersaline geochemical regimes, marine and terrestrial sediment sources, organic-rich and organic-lean sediments, as well as eutrophic and oligotrophic environments.
