IODP & Labor-Infrastruktur
The aim of this service area is to make the cores in the IODP/ ODP core repository available to the international research community and to provide laboratory access to other working groups.
International science and research institutes are brought together through the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), whose purpose is to promote investigation of the earth's structure beneath the sea floor. IODP builds upon the earlier successes of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). In order to learn more about the geological history of the earth from sediment deposits that are millions of years old multiple drilling vessels, including riser, riserless, and mission-specific platforms, are used. The cores retrieved offer a unique view into the origin, development, and present-day structure of the ocean floor.
The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program is a truly international effort. The planning and technical advice for the goals and direction of the program is the responsibility of a worldwide network of universities, oceanographic institutes, and governmental organizations.
