Research interests
I am interested in the biodiversity, biogeography, taxonomy and ecology of modern, tropical benthic foraminifera. My past research projects include the following:
(1) study of planktonic and benthic foraminifera from the Late Cenomanian marls in Pieniny Klippen Belt, focusing on microbiostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental interpretation of conditions that led to anoxic event (OAE2) and planktonic foraminifera extinction;
(2) study of Late Albian to early Cenomanian benthic foraminiferal biofacies from the Northeast German Basin. Paleogeography and interpretation of oxygen-depleted paleoenvironmental conditions in the latest Albian (OAE1d);
(3) Quaternary paleoenvironmental and sea-level changes in the Flensburg Fjord based on analyses of foraminiferal assemblages;
(4) study of recent benthic foraminiferal assemblages on the Sunda and southern Vietnam Shelves, focusing on biodiversity, spatial distribution patterns, environmental controls and creating transfer function for quantitative reconstruction of organic carbon flux to the seafloor from the down-core records;
(5) study of deep-sea benthic foraminifera from the dysoxic Sulu Sea a modern analogue for the mid-Cretaceous Warm Dysoxic Ocean; the distribution patterns, environmental controls and species indicators for dysoxic bottom-waters.
In my current project, I’m concentrating on present day distribution patterns of benthic foraminifera in the eastern Indian Ocean off Sumatra and on reconstruction of paleoproductivity and intermediate water conditions. In my studies, I have used extensively foraminiferal assemblages and distribution patterns, but in this project I will also use the biogeochemical proxies for benthic foraminifera based palaeoceanography.
